First things first. DON'T PANIC!!!
Relax it's only the holidays, this is supposed to be the best time of the year, except for your waist line, right?
So what are you going to do?
Up your workout routine?
Lessen your other days food intake?
Take more vitamins?
All of these are great tips.
Let's start with number one. Start working out. NOW! The more you workout even by taking a few extra steps each day, you will burn the extra calories even before you consume them. Take a few laps around the mall before you shop, get outside into the fresh air. It's still not cold enough for you to hibernate and the extra snow will give you that strength training workout on your legs by adding some resistance. Wake up half an hour earlier (that's right I'm telling you to forfeit some of your zzz's) to do some jumping jacks, push ups and squats in the comfort of your own home.
Second, save your calories. You know you are having that awesome Christmas get together soon, so why not " save" a calorie by not having your treat tonight but saving it for tomorrow or the next day. You should definitely still eat all three meals and two healthy snacks (never miss a meal) but save the decadents for the party.
Also drink a full glass of water before and after your treat. Notice how you are fuller when you imbibe in a full glass of water? Water will help you to not over indulge. Having a glass of water afterward will also help you to stay on track and clear out that sugary/salty snack from your system.
Take your vitamins - with a full glass of water. Chances are with the holidays comes a lot of less than healthy meals and drinks but that doesn't mean you should forgo your entire healthy lifestyle. Continue taking your vitamins, they will counteract all the bad stuff going through your gut. Taking a pro-biotic or eating a yogurt can also help aid the digestion of all these indulgences.
Finally, relax. Make sure to get your zzzz's. Nothing can inhibit a healthy lifestyle more than lack of sleep. Late nights and early mornings can make you cranky, resistant to weight loss and can leave you overloaded in cortisol (a hormone that will tempt you to eat more sugary foods).
I am not saying NOT to have that cookie, or enjoy yourself at that party, just be smart about it. Instead of having a slab of decadent chocolate cake, have a couple (a couple not a truck load) of cookies, hopefully homemade. Or better yet skip the dessert table altogether but make sure you have a treat waiting for you at home. If you have your own treat waiting for you at home, it'll give you the will you need to make it through the party without suffering your waistline. It will taste better, have hardly any preservatives and be friendlier to your waist line. Parties should be for partying, having fun and interacting anyway, not a free for all to over-indulge. Have fun and get mingling. :)
Happy Holidays! :)
