As I sleepily headed out the door in the morning light, I knew today I would push it harder than I have in a while. I am in the process of building some sleek muscle so I knew I had to bring it with all that I had. It was a chest and triceps day again today. Push ups, chest presses, flyes, triceps extensions and push downs were all part of my plan today.
Even though I had higher repetitions, I lifted with the heaviest weight I could to barely get me to 12. The trick with lifting weights is to ensure you can get to your desired repetition (whether that is 12, 10, 8 or 6) without getting pat that last repetition. For example, if I am doing a dumbbell chest press and my desired last repetition is 12, then on repetition 10 I am struggling and by 12 my muscle is completely exhausted. Resting between sets is extremely important because without resting the muscle, chest in this example, I would not be able to push beyond the weights I had previously lifted. My muscles would be completely spent.
Fuel this morning had to support my workout. Oats, egg whites and half a banana is what rounded out my nutrition to
support my muscle growth. I included lots of carbohydrates, protein and glucose (banana) to replenish my glycogen stores and help with muscle recovery. Always remember that after you’ve pushed your muscles beyond limits, you must support your workout with proper nutrition or else your workout will have been in vain. It has taken me years to understand this. Most importantly, remember carbohydrates are not the enemy, after all the word hydrates is in it.
Chomping on my banana,
Until next time,
Live from the inside out
