you know how much I am in complete deep love with chocolate. So in love in fact, I once had a real deep relationship with a hidden stash my kids and husband knew nothing about. Of course hiding food is probably a sickness all on its own, but it's the one I had so no one really knew what my sweets addiction was all about.
Rightly or wrongly, we learn our habits from our families, through no fault of their own, they (we) just don't realize sometimes how much our children are actually watching and absorbing from us. Keep in mind though, they are watching... EVERY LITTLE THING! I learned the "stashing my food" from my dad. He used to go out to the donut shop and hide 6 donuts in the basement fridge. He was so excellent at portioning though. He would have 1/2 of the donut every night, that was his sweet treat. Unfortunately, the only lesson I had learned from that was the hiding the food part, not the portion control part. He was teaching through action, I was just willing to pick up a part of the lesson.
Through the years, I learned to hide food from my brothers (that was a task on its own), from my parents (I didn't want to admit what I was eating when it got too bad) and eventually from my husband and my children. I started by hiding small treats and it eventually became bigger ticket items. Ice cream bars and chocolate would disappear and it's carcasses in the form of empty tubs and
wrappers were to be found in the bottom of the trash bin for no one to find, especially me, as I didn't want to admit the damage I had caused to my body.
In the past couple of months, something magical has happened, because I have been nourishing my body with great food and nutrition, my cravings have literally gone by the waste side, especially during that dreaded time of the month. You know that time (anywhere between 7 to 3 days before your period) when all you want to do is binge on a decadent chocolate bar or 10 or eat an ooey, gooey slab of cake? That feeling of euphoria you get as you are biting into your sweet of choice, the tingle as it passes your lips and slips down your throat and then the almost immediate guilt as it gets into your gut? That has all disappeared. Something magical happens when you put the right nutrients in your body. You feel re-energized, you feel more active and you feel as if you can conquer anything.
Battling my demons has been effortless! I didn't even know I was doing it until I realized it was my time of month (again - funny how those things come around monthly) and I have craved nothing at all. My shake has covered my chocolate cravings, my little green tea infused chocolate snacks keep me energized and my abundance of water keeps me from having cramps.
Hooray for battling the period and all of it's triggers! I know it has it's functions, but why not make it a healthy month instead of one with dread and regret!
